Chicago Pulmonary Specialists
Retrofit transforms office space into pulmonary clinic at about half the cost and twice the speed of a similar renovation in a hospital
Chicago Pulmonary Specialists set out to transform the second floor of an office building into its primary location. A key design goal was to emphasize the organization’s focus on young athletes with breathing problems. However, the client had a restricted budget and it needed to move as quickly as possible.
Three months later, the group moved into a 5,000-square-foot space that supports its focus on sports medicine. Not only was the project fast (three months from start of design to construction completion), but it came in at half the cost of a comparable gut/rehab at a hospital.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Custom-designed steel display stands meet a tight budget.
- To reduce costs, the design only moves a third of the walls and reuses three quarters of the office furniture.
- Translucent film and acoustical gaskets applied to existing glass doors create privacy for offices-turned-exam rooms.
- Renovation overcomes MEP system challenges to add seven sinks and a shower.
