Lab addition expands course offerings, better prepares students for STEM careers

A 2,500-square-foot expansion responds to rising enrollment at the College of Lake County’s (CLC) Southlake Campus. The expansion allows the college to offer advanced chemistry courses so students pursuing STEM careers can complete more requirements at this branch campus.

Energy-efficient Fume Hoods

The 1,300-square-foot chemistry lab, which accommodates 20 students, has 5 fume hoods. Each fume hood ties into the HVAC system to adjust the air flow as lab sashes are opened and closed.

Clear and Open

Two 75” monitors fold down from the ceiling to keep floor space clear and give students optimal views.

Courtyard

A courtyard between the existing glass atrium and the addition gives students and staff a private area to spend time outdoors.

Complement without Copying

The façade of the addition complements the existing campus without copying it. For instance, it uses the same brick pattern, but inverses it. The addition also has a variation of the metal panel and frit pattern of the nearby atrium.
