The 190,000-square-foot Hubble Middle School exemplifies program-driven design. From the wetlands surrounding it to the high-performance systems within it, the school sets a standard for energy efficiency and environmental respect.

A Building That Teaches

The school’s green features enhance the curriculum. Teachers can use the learning gardens, outdoor studios, green roof, and surrounding wetlands to support their lessons.

Bridge

A glass bridge connects the main building to the classroom wing and overlooks the nature observatory. The bridge houses a multiuse art lab on the first floor and the library on the second.

Community Connection

Nearly the entire facility is designed for shared use with the community. An agreement with local park districts allows residents to schedule use of the facility during non-school hours.

An Enlightened
Learning Center

The learning resource center gives users the impression that the third-story space floats amid the trees that surround the school.

Green Roof

A green roof accessible from the learning resource center supports the district’s middle school curriculum.

Wetlands Support Curriculum

A five-acre detention basin planted with native prairie grasses is visible from half the classrooms.
