The centerpiece of a healthier community: recreation center sparks riverside revitalization, increases membership by nearly 60% within two months
Ottawa’s YMCA, built in the 1960s, had become dilapidated and no longer met the community’s needs. The new Ottawa YMCA, located at the confluence of the Illinois and Fox rivers, rises as the first of several projects that will rejuvenate the community’s riverfront.
Market research projected that the new facility would increase membership from 1,900 to 2,700 within 12 to 18 months of completion. In reality, membership surged to 3,000 in the first two months after the facility opened, and the numbers continue to grow.
An extensive glass curtain wall offers members views of the Illinois River and an adjacent park. At night, the YMCA becomes a glowing beacon showcasing internal activity to the community. Ottawa’s quaint downtown inspired the YMCA’s terra-cotta-colored metal panels and limestone-colored precast concrete. Additionally, the cross-bracing behind the curtain wall pays tribute to the historic Ottawa Rail Bridge visible from the building.
The Ottawa YMCA serves not only community members but also other groups ranging from several local high school swim teams to the Ottawa Rotary Club. Key components include a lap pool, therapy/activity pool, splash pad, gymnasium, elevated track, child watch area, lounge, exercise studios, and intergenerational room. Members also have access to the designated rehabilitation center for the YMCA’s health care partner OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center.
