Kurt Volkman
Director of Corporate & Commercial Architecture
As Legat’s director of corporate and commercial architecture, Kurt Volkman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C leads design across a wide range of projects: office, retail, multifamily housing, hotel, and mixed-use. His 25 years of experience include leadership positions at several global design firms.
Whether he’s leading new construction or reviving an existing space, Kurt’s ultimate goal is to become an extension of the client’s company to create environments that strengthen user experience and the client’s brand.
His designs have helped corporate clients increase productivity and reduce absenteeism. Retailers and hotels have benefited with increased sales and people staying longer. Developers appreciate Kurt’s flexibility in adjusting designs based on their business models. When it comes to mixed-use projects, Kurt makes sure that the design honors every tenant’s front door and sets up every use for success.
An important part of Kurt’s design philosophy is “designing for longevity”—by studying trends and forecasting, he creates designs that stand the test of time and adapt to new uses.
His portfolio includes more than 21 million square feet of corporate/commercial projects, 28,000 apartment/condo units, 3,500 hotel rooms, 12.5 million square feet of retail space, and 3.5 million square feet in convention centers.
Kurt holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Florida and a B.S. in Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
