Same work, new spotlight: appointment of seasoned architect April Maifield to new role brings Legat Architects’ established private-market practice to the forefront

During her three decades with Legat Architects, April Maifield and her coworkers have designed many places where people live and work: multifamily housing, hotels, senior living facilities, banks, offices, and mixed-use buildings. Such projects have received less public attention because of Legat’s reputation for education and healthcare work.

Spurred by housing shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic-fueled affordability crisis, developers and contractors have repeatedly contacted Legat about designing cost-conscious housing and mixed-use projects. In response to this increased demand, the firm’s leadership has formalized its approach to these projects.

Key to the initiative is appointing Maifield as leader of Legat’s Hospitality and Private Development practice. The position requires her to assemble and oversee teams across the firm’s six Midwestern studios. Residential projects will include new or modernized multifamily developments as well as retrofits that transform non-residential facilities into housing units. She will also be responsible for directing hospitality, corporate, commercial, and entertainment facility teams.

“April’s adaptability across markets, along with her skills at coordinating many stakeholders and delivering complex projects, makes her the logical choice for this appointment,” said Legat President/CEO Jeff Sandberg. “We’ve been doing this type of work all along, and April’s new role is a signal that we’re bringing it to the forefront.”

For building owners, Maifield’s appointment means having one leader who can draw on expertise from across Legat’s six studios to build the right team for each project. It also gives clients a direct connection to an architect who understands the financial, operational, and user-experience pressures that drive private development.
