A recreational, social, and spiritual anchor: community center ushers in new era of fellowship and growth for Chicagoland Muslim community
A new community center creates a beacon of unity at the heart of the Mosque Foundation. The 50,000-square-foot multipurpose facility not only supports fitness and sports activities but also hosts educational programs and community gatherings.
A three-story central volume houses a grand atrium with a variety of seating options, a café, and a children’s playroom. Skylights fill the space with natural light and create light patterns throughout. Upper-level classrooms encircle the atrium and display a third-floor courtyard and roof garden that open to the sky.
The building’s core is flanked by a gymnasium and an indoor soccer field, each featuring elevated walk/jog tracks and occupiable roof terraces above. Retractable bleachers allow both spaces to double as event venues that welcome up to 800 people. The center also houses two double-story fitness centers and 20 classrooms designed for 600 students.
An Islamic-inspired exterior features a modern, abstract pattern of diagonal lines forming triangles. Colorful glass chips embedded in random recessed triangles within the facade add texture and depth to the precast concrete and complement the metal panels’ color scheme.
