Regional innovation, statewide distinction: first facility of its kind in eastern Iowa brings in-demand career and technical education options to more than 9,000 students
The North Scott Regional Innovation Center responds to a growing need for skilled laborers and workers with technical knowledge in eastern Iowa. The 88,200-square-foot facility stems from a partnership between six school districts and Eastern Iowa Community College. It offers hands-on learning experiences to prepare students for high-demand jobs in fields such as agriculture, animal science, nursing, construction, and diesel tech.
A commons area and an 11,000-square-foot arena can host gatherings ranging from professional development sessions to large events and even wedding receptions. Veterinary program students have access to a simulated vet zone with kennels, while agriculture students benefit from a greenhouse and a livestock area with animal stalls and an overhead door for vehicle access. The construction tech lab features bathroom bays for plumbing training, and the diesel tech lab has four vehicle bays, automotive training modules, and a hydraulic simulator. The food science zone includes student team stations and a space for processing meat.
The facility’s simplified structure and metal panel system accelerated construction and reduced costs — typical concrete masonry wall construction would have taken four times longer. Additionally, the pre-engineered metal structure’s ability to span larger distances was more cost effective than a traditional steel structure, particularly for the larger arena space. Exposed ceilings not only save construction costs but also display ductwork and piping to support the curriculum.
This is the only place like this in the state of Iowa you will find for high school students.
