Adaptive reuse project transforms bank in century-old facility into dermatology clinic with advanced technologies and spa-like atmosphere
A 6,000-square-foot retrofit converts a former grocery store (built circa 1900), bank, and start-up into a high-tech dermatology space. The design follows Northwestern Medicine’s finish and materials standards but also considers the facility’s location near a coffee shop and just half a block north of Geneva’s main shopping thoroughfare. A subdued jewel-toned color scheme and distinctive material palette create a less clinical, more spa-like setting with a retail ambiance that complements the downtown setting.
The main lobby features an oculus-like ceiling cove whose midnight blue color and vibrant lights suggest a night sky. Two custom light fixtures blend to create the appearance of one larger fixture.
The reception area offers a greeting desk and a small consultation space. Frosted glass subtly displays the Northwestern Medicine logo. The renovation also brings a retail area with products on display and wall monitors describing services. The retail space is visible from the sidewalk that passes the clinic.
The clinical zone houses a central nurse station, as well as flexible rooms for both medically necessary and cosmetic procedures including the increasingly popular CoolSculpting and a variety of laser treatments.
The design repurposes some original bank features—the vault becomes a conference room and back storage room. Although it is permanently opened, the vault door still shows the “emergency open” key behind a glass panel. Additionally, the former drive-through window displays an outdoor staff seating area.
