The Galena Territory to welcome new facilities and site upgrades

The Galena Territory to welcome new facilities and site upgrades

New facilities/site enhancements at recreational and residential lake community to step up amenities, create year-round venue, and reflect focus on natural surroundings.

The Galena Territory, located just outside the historic city of Galena, Illinois, has carved a niche as a destination for golfers, fishers, boaters, equestrians, and nature enthusiasts. Within the semi-private recreational and residential community’s 6,800 acres are prairies and woodlands, the 225-acre Lake Galena, the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, and many other amenities.

A new marina complex and pavilion will enhance The Galena Territory’s reputation for conservation and recreation. The projects, designed by Legat Architects and Axiom Consultants, will serve residents and their guests for activities ranging from wedding receptions to outdoor concerts. Additional planned work includes a new boat dock system, landscape enhancements, and a new playground.

“These new facilities will not only provide an updated, more functional space for our members and their guests, but they will also reflect our commitment to preserving and celebrating our natural surroundings, which is one of the reasons our members choose to live here,” said Steve Wyland, general manager, The Galena Territory Association.

The 7,200-square-foot marina will house expanded retail space, a boat maintenance workshop, a community/conference room, a kitchen, and bathrooms that boaters can access without having to go into the building. The 7,600-square-foot pavilion, replacing a screened-in facility with no heating or cooling, creates a rentable venue for events all year long. It includes a kitchen, a large gathering area, a patio that doubles as a stage, and outdoor space for concert seating, as well as a new pathway that food trucks can access for large events.

“The design respects the history of The Galena Territory and the architectural character of surrounding homes,” said Legat’s Ted Haug. “It also offers a semi-contemporary look to appeal to the next generation.”

Haug and his team selected building materials that are indigenous to the area. Limestone quarried and shaped in Galena, for instance, will appear on both the exterior facade and the interior of the facilities.

“It’s a beautiful yellow stone that gives the design an outdoor feel,” said Haug.

Conlon Construction will build the projects, expected to break ground in fall 2023 and finish in 2024.
